Rubber Mats- General Info
Sound Absorbing MatsGeneralIn general we believe that most rubber mats on the market today are much better at reducing impact sound than airborne sound. Where you are trying to just trying to attenuate footfall this is OK. However in general people are looking for over the floor rubber mat solutions that will attenuate both footfall but more importantly airborne sound coming up from below. We believe only very high density rubber matt solutions can adequately perform this task. The Absorbalay solution with a density of 15kg/m2 we believe is the most effective at the task. In addition the ease of fitting is another major concern as this can materially affect the final result. In our opinion Absorbalay is also the easiest material to cut and work with. In effect it becomes the most cost effective mat on the market at reducing the transmission of airborne sound upwards (Absorbaly £23.80/m2 vs.Acoustilay 26.50/m2) Wooden Floors and laminatesIf you are laying a rubber mat under a wooden floor then be very careful that you don't choose one that is too springy. It will feel like you are walking on a moving surface. For this reason we recommend use of the Isonic 6mm rubber mat. Click here if you wish to buy Absorbalay online, we can calculate the materials you need. We have registered Absorbalay fitters who can quote and fit for you in the London area. (please contact us for more details) Both of these mats can act as an underlay for various floor types. Where you are considering laminate or other hard flooring the Isonic is the better choice as it is less springy. Where carpets are to be used the Absorbalay matt offers a superior impact resistance and a very comfortable walking surface. It can be substituted for carpet underlay. Rubber Matting SolutionsAdvantagesRubber mats can act to reduce airborne sound transmission and impact transmission without the need for lifting up floor boards. In many cases you will have neither the access or the time to lift up floor boards. The use of rubber mats offers a good impact protection for neighbours below . We would advise sealing between floor boards as well as you can beneath the dBAN mat to effect the best possible result, as this brings into play your wooden floor as an additional barrier ( sealing flrooboards is a bit like closing a door). Bear in MindThere is a vast array of rubber mat solutions on offer all of which offer soundproofing qualities. However be aware that you are typically trying to resolve a problem of airborne sound proofing as well as impact soundproofing. While all mats much improve the impact side of the equation, it is the airborne that is typically what many people are trying to tackle. When assessing which mat will work best for you look at the mass (or weight per metre squared) this is typically going to give you a good guide as to how effective the mat will be for reducing airborne sound. The heavier the better. We compare three popular products
